ABC endorses Bill Keefe for at-large RA seat
By Lise Hausrath Simmons - Reston Times - 03/01/2005

The Alliance for a Better Community (ABC), a Reston-based nonpartisan citizen group, decided last week to endorse Bill Keefe as its candidate for the at-large Reston Association seat that is open this term.
Keefe is running against former RA executive vice president and chief executive officer Jerry Volloy and Brian Brown, a local real estate executive familiar with city planning issues.

The seat they are vying for is currently held by Vicki Wingert, who decided not to run for re-election for a second term.

Keefe, a professional planner who has lived in Reston for 27 years, has been involved in many aspects of the Reston community, and ABC members especially liked his broad experience with numerous area groups.

He has worked a long time with the Reston Planning and Zoning Committee, serving as co-chair in 1998 and 1999, and was a member of Reston Community Center's Governance Committee from 2002 to 2003.

Keefe also has been involved with Reston Youth Basketball and the Reston Runners and served on the Reston 2000 task group.

He said his main focus as an RA member would be to invest more in teen programs and facilities in order to give young children “an alternative ... to computer time and other issues.”

There will be two public forums this month to give Reston residents the chance to hear firsthand from the candidates.

The first forum will be held Wednesday, March 9, at 7 p.m. at Dogwood Elementary School, 12300 Glade Drive. The second forum will be Saturday, March 12, at the RA headquarters at 1930 Isaac Newton Square.

Each forum will be taped and broadcast on Reston Community Television Channel 28 on March 18 at 8 p.m.; March 19 at 1 and 8 p.m.; March 25 at 8 p.m.; and March 26 at 1 and 8 p.m.

Ballots will be mailed to RA members on March 11 and must be returned to RA's counting agent by 5 p.m. April 1.

Members can vote by mail or via the Internet by visiting http://www.reston.org and clicking on the “vote here” icon. Online voters will need their user name and password, which is printed on the ballot mailed to their home. For more information about the election, call the RA at 703-435-6530.
